5 Reasons Why Stranger Things Is Worth Watching
Have you seen Game of thrones? What about Friends and How I Met Your Mother? Well if you haven’t seen these shows I’m sure you must have heard of them. I mean Friends is an insanely hit TV show and How I Met Your Mother is loved due to its modern views of friendships and relationships. And GOT, I don’t think I need to say anything about this show. Game of Thrones fever has swept the entire globe and it doesn’t look like it’s going to be stopping any time soon. I am a massive fan of these shows myself but 2 years ago I stumbled upon another show and everything about this TV show surprised me because I didn’t expect to like it so much. The show I’m talking about is Stranger Things.
I found it accidentally on my friend’s hard drive and ended up watching it because I literally had nothing to do. My brother and my father then also started watching it with me and we all were hooked. We were so invested with the show that we were so disappointed when it ended after only 8 episodes because we wanted more. What surprised me was how this show was able to help connect two different generations.
This hit Netflix show is basically about this group of 3 (12 year olds) friends, Mike, Lucas and Dustin, whose friend, Will, suddenly goes missing and the journey that they and the people around them like Will’s mother, Joyce, and the chief of police, Jim Hopper, go through (which also includes killing this weird blood-sucking monster) to get Will back with the help of this mysterious girl with powers who comes out of nowhere (Eleven). Then of course Mike’s elder sister, Nancy, and Will’s elder brother, Jonathan, along with Nancy’s boyfriend, Steve, also get trapped into this mess.
I don’t know what really attracted me towards the show because I know nothing about the American culture in the 80’s (nor did I know what eggos are, waffles yes, but eggos was a first) but I don’t think that was what attracted me to it in the first place. So, on FINALLY getting a release date for season 3, here’s a list of 5 reasons why I found the show so captivating and why everyone else who hasn’t watched it should watch it now before the 3rd season comes out:
1. The theme (duh)
If you’re a nerd like me who loves sci-fi and horror and thrill, then this is the show for you. If you’ve seen the old 80’s horror movies like ‘Jaws’, or the ‘Shining’ then you can guess what is going to be in store in this show but if u haven’t watched these movies and want to witness a little taste of that horror and thrill then definitely watch this show. Also, the way it balances humor with horror is perfection. The show is great in showcasing human emotions, triumphs and defeats, playing it up with the supernatural element.
2. The soundtrack
If the name isn’t making you curious about the show then the soundtrack definitely will. It’s mysterious and spooky and just gives you this vibe that just entices you. Kylie Dixon and Michael Stein of the synth band created this amazing, eerie soundtrack. I rarely skipped the opening theme song because it adds an awesome touch to the show. Oh and did I forget to mention it was also nominated for the Grammys last year.
3. The friendship and nerd adventures
The four boys, Mike, Will, Dustin and Lucas, are awesome and all different and unique in their own way. They all have different personalities but what is so appealing is the friendship shown between the boys. They’re always cycling, communicating to each other through walkie-talkies, swearing, getting in trouble with their parents and just being kids. Their portrayal is so real that it’s definitely going to remind you of your squad and all those childhood memories. Even if you didn’t own walkie-talkies (though I did) and ride your bike that much, you’ll still be feeling nostalgic by the time the show ends.
4. The references
Stranger Things is influenced by a lot of pop culture especially from the classic 1980s films and television. If you’re a nerd like me then you will for sure get nostalgic when you see the references to to Alien, Star Wars, Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, E.T., Jaws, The Shining, Goonies, Nightmare on Elm Street and many more. The creators and masterminds, The Duffer Brothers, have repeatedly said that they were inspired by these classic movies and TV shows and that they themselves are such huge fans of Stephen Spielberg and Stephen King. Some references are just out there whereas others are more subtle. Either way, you just get excited whenever you get to pick apart the references to many of our favorite movies and books.
5. Last but not least, Badass female characters
From Eleven to Nancy to Joyce, all 3 are awesome and badass in their own way and personally I feel they make the show. Eleven, who is psychokinetic and also has telepathic abilities, is the highlight of the show. You just feel yourself rooting for her. Then there’s Nancy, who initially seems like a character from any rom-com, soon turns into this gun-wielding badass. And of course there is Joyce, who will do anything to get her son back. Her determination and strength are inspiring and make her a favorite character. The best thing about these female characters is how they’re not cliché and still their strengths and complexities are highlighted. They seem more real and relatable.
So this was just my view on the show based on the first season. The second season has even more breathtaking moments and is filled with more scares, and intense and exciting scenes. Apparently Stranger Things is the most popular streaming show in the world according to Observer. Season 3 will release in 2019 and I'm crying cz i need more like right now!
So if you haven’t seen this show, go watch it now and let me know what you thought of it. It definitely won’t disappoint. I mean it has been nominated twice for ‘Best Television Series’ at the Emmys, Golden Globes, SAG awards and Critic Choice Awards.
